The DevOps Engineer's Role
One person, every stage: what a DevOps engineer actually does day to day.
You've seen the six stages an app goes through. Here's what the DevOps engineer is actually doing across all of them.
What a DevOps Engineer Actually Does
- Plans infrastructure requirements alongside architects during design
- Builds the developer platform: CI/CD pipelines, environments, tooling
- Automates everything: builds, tests, deployments, rollbacks
- Deploys applications reliably and repeatably
- Monitors systems and responds to incidents
- Optimizes performance, cost, and availability continuously
Notice what's missing from that list: "writes the app's features." That's still the developer's job. DevOps is the practice of making sure everything a developer writes can actually ship, and keep running, without either team burning out doing it.
