The Gen AI Revolution
In November 2022, one product put AI in the hands of everyone with a keyboard. Here's how we got there.
- 2017: Google invents the Transformer, the architecture behind every major AI model today
- 2022: ChatGPT launches and reaches 100 million users in 2 months, the fastest product adoption ever
- 2023: AI stops being a research topic and becomes a job skill
- 2024–25: AI agents begin completing multi-step tasks on their own
The Timeline That Matters
The Transformer
Google researchers publish "Attention Is All You Need." This one paper introduces the architecture that powers every modern AI model: GPT, Claude, Gemini, all of them. Without it, none of this happens.
GPT-1, 2, 3
OpenAI trains progressively larger models on progressively more data. GPT-3 stuns researchers. It writes essays, answers questions, and generates code without being specifically trained for any of them.
Image generation goes public
DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney launch. Anyone can now generate professional-quality images just by describing them. No design skills, no tools, no experience needed.
ChatGPT
OpenAI wraps GPT-3.5 in a simple chat interface. One million users in 5 days. One hundred million in 2 months. The fastest consumer adoption in history.
Every company immediately forms an "AI task force."
The race begins
GPT-4, Claude 2, Gemini, Llama. A new frontier model nearly every month. GitHub Copilot hits 1 million paid users. AI stops being a research topic and becomes a job requirement.
Agents and reasoning
Models gain the ability to reason through complex problems step by step. AI agents begin completing multi-step tasks on their own. MCP standardises how AI connects to external tools and data.
What November 2022 Actually Changed
Before ChatGPT, using AI required ML expertise. After ChatGPT, it required a keyboard.
Same underlying technology. Completely different barrier to entry.
❌ Before Nov 2022
✅ After Nov 2022Most engineers working today started their careers in the "before." The shift happened in about 18 months.
What comes next is moving faster.
